Summary: "Why is the land so important to Cassie's family? It takes the events of one turbulent year - the year of the night riders and the burnings, the year a white girl humiliates Cassie in public simply because she is black - to show Cassie that having a place of their own is the Logan family's lifeblood. It is the land that gives the Logans their courage and pride - no matter how others may degrade them, the Logans possess something no one can take away."

- Imagine that you are a modern-day Cassie. You go to a store or restaurant and are told that you will not be served and that you cannot buy anything. You are told to leave. How would you feel? Write an essay about your feelings over such an incident and share it with the members of your group.
- Write a short poem similar to "Roll of Thunder" at the beginning of Chapter 11. Choose any character and write in the spirit of that person's feelings.
- Imagine that you are an attorney representing Cassie and her family. You intend to sue the local school system for not providing Cassie and the students at her school an education equal to that of surrounding white schools. What would your arguments be? Around what points would you build your case? Working with a group, write the court scene showing how this drama would be played out. Act the scene for the class.
